To be a success these days, car manufacturers have to do something different to get the edge over their rivals. Many do this by steering away from the expected styling of modern cars to create something just a little bit different? With the Aygo, Toyota have done just that. Whichever way you look at the Aygo you can’t help but feel you are looking at one of the finest examples of a small city car available today. Take a walk around the car and you will understand what I mean. The view from the front, side or from the rear, cement in my mind that this is a stylish city car with the curves in all the right places, giving you an all round dynamic and sporty design. Available as a 3 door and a 5 door version and a choice of six colours, you can personalise your Aygo to suit your needs. The interior follows the example of the high quality of the exterior of the Toyota Aygo. Most people expect it to be a bit cramped in what looks like a small car, but surprisingly Toyota claims there is enough room for a driver at 6 ft 3” to comfortably drive the car? Now I’m thinking to myself that that doesn’t look possible, and myself at 6ft exactly, clamber into the car to be pleasantly surprised, it does exactly what it says on the tin. This is achieved by the cabin being further forward than usual creating a more spacious interior, allowing drivers of all shapes and sizes to find a comfortable driving position. Once inside, you get the feeling that everything is built to last. The seats are sporty and comfortable, and the dashboard is scratch resistant due to its sharkskin graining. The instrument panel features easy to read two-tone displays and the centre console is perfectly designed so all the features are easily recognisable and easy to reach. All in all a well designed car inside and out, one of the reasons it was voted Top Gear’s car of the year in 2005

Safety

With a Euro NCAP (European new car assessment) rating of 4 stars, the Toyota Aygo is one of the safest small cars around. Starting on the outside the Aygo’s body strength is due to the strong bodyshell taking avantage of Toyota’s MICS, which to you and I is Minimum intrusion cabin system, which disperses and absorbs the energy from impacts from the front side and rear of the vehicle. To stop you from hitting another car which may not have such a strong body as the Aygo, you are equipped with ABS brakes as standard. For those who don’t know, ABS means anti-locking brake system, which assists the driver in maintaining control of the car during heavy braking. The ABS is combined with EBD, Electronic brake-force distribution, which applies the appropriate pressure to each individual wheel during heavy braking and cornering, to keep the car balanced and stable. 3 point seat belts are standard for all passengers in the front and in the back. The two front seatbelts incorporate pre-tensioners and force limiters to provide that all important extra protection. SRS, Supplementary restraint system, airbags are standard on all of the Aygo range for drivers and front passengers. The Toyota Aygo+ and above, get SRS side airbags in addition to the drivers and front passengers airbags for that additional safety. Also in the same range of Aygo+ and above, the rear seats are equipped with isofix anchor points for the safest securing of child seats. Combine all of the aforementioned safety features and you can see why Euro NCAP awarded the Toyota Aygo with such a high safety rating.

Performance/Economy

The Toyota Aygo is designed to do everything the modern day city driver requires. With the sophisticated 1.0 VVT-I engine (Variable valve timing with intelligence) you get excellent levels of torque for effortless driving, in city centres and also out on the open road. With an electric power steering system and a turning circle of 9.4m and good all round visibility, the Toyota Aygo is probably the easiest car in the world to park. In an environment where you are required to constantly stop and start city centre drivers require a car that will accelerate effectively. The Toyota Aygo has the lightest engine on the market, weighing in at just 69kg. This engine has been expertly designed to provide high levels of torque at low engine speeds which allows the driver to get smoother acceleration from a standing start. With petrol prices continuing to increase you will be pleased to know that you get an exceptional 61.4mpg (miles per gallon) in the Toyota Aygo. Combine this with the low emissions of the car, meaning only £35 a year road tax, you have an economic car which is kind to the environment and to your pocket!
